Cracks in the Foundation

I'm putting on my nationalistic hat this morning. Today is CANADA DAY. In a few days, our American neighbours will celebrate their Independence Day and, just a day after that, the country in which I live, Venezuela, will celebrate its own independence.

Since today has a national flavour, the verse assigned for me to read this morning carried the same savour.

"But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well" —Luke 12:31. Matthew's version of this verse speaks about the righteousness that is characteristic of the kingdom of God. That got me thinking (putting on my nationalistic hat) about the foundations upon which a kingdom needs to be built.

The foundation upon which God's kingdom is build is Jesus Christ.

Once upon a time the foundations of my country were established around a strong moral base, a base taken from a belief in God and an acceptance of the Scriptures. But since those strong beginnings, cracks have appeared in the foundation of my country. A few years ago, Canada was officially declared a "secular society." The society's treatment of all things christian reflects the damage that time has done to what has made Canada strong.

Now I know that calling a country "Cristian" is relatively meaningless. But as I look at this verse I wonder what lurks around the corner for nations like mine who's foundations have been weakened as faith has weakened.

The psalmist issues a solemn warning, beginning with: "When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3-7) Then follows the reminder that God is sovereign, and He will judge the wicked—scary thought as to what the implications might be to my country.

But what about those who cling to righteousness, work for justice, and seek His kingdom? Verse 7 tells us: "…the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face."

And what can the righteous do? We can continue to pray. We can continue to be salt and light. We can speak out while we are still allowed a voice.

May God give us more upright men and women who will seek His kingdom and His righteous. May God send revival to our land and restore the foundations before this building which houses our human identity, collapses.

  1. It is so hard to watch what is happening to our nation. But we can pray, speak out, and be salt and light. And regardless, it is all in God's plan.

  2. I lament daily over the rapid collapse of Western society's moral foundations. Nations that were established upon Biblical principles are abandonning those principles en masse, and Australia's right there with them.

Thanks for reminding us to be the salt and light of the world.
