Nearer Than You Think

The move was deliberate for another reason—it fulfilled the prophecy from Isaiah 9:1-7 that told of the Saviour who would come to “Galilee of the Gentiles” and bring light into the land of darkness and establish a kingdom of justice and righteousness that would last forever. It is interesting that Jesus, whose primary mission was to the people of Israel should, through the choice of where He would make His home base, signal hope for the salvation of the Gentiles.
“…the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).
Matthew records that Jesus picked up the message that John had been forced to lay down when he was arrested: “From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near’” (4:17).
Nearer than most thought.
I ask myself how conscious I am of just how close this “kingdom of heaven” is to me? How conscious am I that Jesus is walking beside me. A while back, when we were looking for a picture to put on the front cover of THRIVE, our denominational magazine, I discovered a stock photo similar to the one I have used with this post. I thought it spoke volumes about what our daily experience with Jesus should be like—that consciousness that the Lord walks with us through the day.
The kingdom of heaven is near. Jesus is near. The light has come. And every step we walk during our day should be walked in that light, with that consciousness of the One who walks beside us and in whom there is no darkness at all.
How would it change my day if I was more aware of Who was walking beside me?
