No Longer a Slave

The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping the covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments” (Deuteronomy 7:7-9, NIV).

I am reminded of salvation as I read these verses.

Those of us who believe were once like the galley slaves of old, chained to the bottom of the ship of death. If the ship went down—as it inevitably will—we would have gone down with it. But God, in His love and mercy, set His affection on us and sent His Son to provide the way for us to be free from the chains of our sin that held us captive. With a mighty hand He redeemed us—not because of anything we were or could do, but because of that great love and His commitment to the promise He had made back in Genesis 3:15 to crush the head of the one who kept us chained to the bottom of the death ship.

He is God. He is faithful. He is love.
